About This Course
Welcome to Phonetics and Phonology II. This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the English vowel system, focusing on the theoretical foundations and structural classification of vowel sounds. Throughout our study, we will analyze the Cardinal Vowel System as a reference framework for articulation and systematically explore the properties of monophthongs, diphthongs, and triphthongs.
Beyond establishing conceptual knowledge, you will develop critical practical skills in auditory identification, articulatory description, and accurate production. Furthermore, you will master the use of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) to transcribe spoken English vowels with academic precision.
This introductory module provides the theoretical foundations and practical language skills needed to develop a solid understanding of English phonetics and phonology from the beginning of your learning journey.
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Identify and accurately pronounce English monophthongs (short and long vowels).
- Use the vowel quadrilateral to explain the position of vowels in the mouth.
- Describe and transcribe English pure vowels using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA).
- Explain, recognize, and pronounce English diphthongs.
