Basic Mathematics – Primary School Teacher Education (PEP)

UNIV-BATNA2

📐 Basic Mathematics

Foundational Course for First-Year Students

Primary School Teacher Education (PEP) – Arabic Language Program
Higher National School of Education (ENS), University of Batna 2

📖 About This Course

Basic Mathematics is a foundational course designed to introduce the essential concepts, language, and reasoning that form the basis of modern mathematics. Rather than focusing only on calculations, it helps students develop logical thinking, analytical reasoning, and structured problem-solving skills that are essential for university studies and future teaching careers.

Throughout the course, students will strengthen their ability to analyze mathematical structures, apply formal reasoning, and communicate mathematical ideas using appropriate notation. Interactive learning activities, quizzes, and tutorial exercises (TD) provide continuous opportunities to practice and reinforce these concepts.

🧩 Course Structure

The course is organized into three complementary modules:

🧠 Module 1

Introduction to Mathematical Logic

Statements, logical connectors, predicates, and quantifiers.

📊 Module 2

Set Theory

Sets, subsets, Cartesian products, set operations, complements, and partitions.

🔗 Module 3

Relations

Properties of relations, equivalence relations, equivalence classes, quotient sets, and order relations.

🎯 What You Will Learn (Learning Outcomes)

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • ✅ Understand fundamental mathematical concepts and structures.
  • ✅ Apply set-theoretic methods to problem-solving.
  • ✅ Analyze the properties of various mathematical relations.
  • ✅ Construct clear and precise mathematical structures.
  • ✅ Evaluate mathematical arguments with confidence and academic precision.

These competencies provide a solid foundation for advanced mathematics courses and for the professional preparation of future primary school teachers.

📌 Requirements

To succeed in this course, students should possess:

  • Basic secondary-school mathematics knowledge.
  • Fundamental arithmetic and algebra skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret mathematical notation.
  • Basic logical reasoning and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong motivation to actively participate in learning activities and tutorial exercises (TD).
